Eating green

Cooking and Camping 101

What to eat while camping? Are fresh foods a good idea? Eating something other than oatmeal (PLEASE)?

The summer season offers many opportunities to escape into nature and go camping! We will provide suggestions that mainly apply to camping at a fixed site, but some of these ideas could easily adapt to a short 1-2 night self-sufficient hike.

First, the grocery list, the essentials:

  • A few spices portioned into Ziploc or reusable bags

  • Salt and pepper

  • Sugar, brown sugar

  • Oil

  • Butter or margarine

  • Balsamic vinegar

  • Coffee and/or tea

  • Unrefrigerated milk carton

  • Condiments that are easy to keep warm: ketchup, mustard

  • Mixed nuts and dried fruits

  • Soft, protein bars

  • Water

Next, to create your menu, divide your days by your three meals and based on the activities you plan to do, also add your snacks to your schedule. Depending on your equipment and the quality of your cooler, prioritize using fresh ingredients quickly during your stay to avoid waste.

We suggest these two days with our menu ideas:

Friday

  • Breakfast: Banana and oatmeal pancakes

  • Mountain biking: Mixed nuts and dried fruits, protein bars

  • Lunch: Quesadillas

  • Dinner: Pasta with roasted pepper sauce, S'mores

Saturday

  • Breakfast: Shakshuka with tomatoes and peppers

  • Hiking: Beef jerky, mixed nuts and dried fruits, protein bars

  • Lunch: Tuna wraps

  • Water activity on Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP)

  • Dinner: Ramen noodle soup with tofu

We can't stress this enough, preparation is key!

With that, happy camping!
